Preparatory work

The original brief for the cover imagined something that drew from 1960s painted book covers and movie posters, although it evolved over time to something more contemporary. The mix of retro sci-fi and fantasy did however remain. This set of concepts track those changes.

In 2014 I was asked by the then Children’s Laureate Chris Riddell if I would do the book jacket for the first book of his Scavenger series: Zoid.  Of course I jumped at the chance, not least because I grew up loving  Frazetta’s work on the Conan books and Foss’s work on almost every sci-fi book I read as a kid. The roughs shown here make clear that appetite.
